Still life painting is almost a right of passage for anyone who wants to be an artist. Although a lot of beginning artists moan about having to paint a still life, they also understand that their skills will develop through doing just such activies. Painting a still life allows an artist to practice all of the elements of art in one convenient, compact setting. That is why the still life painting is still around today as a style. You have to be able to get proportion, shading, line qualy, composion, and perspective right. By concentrating on a simple landscape or a set of objects on a table, the still life painter is able to practice skills in an environment that is not too complicated. After that, the artist has freedom to use his imagination to tackle ever greater projects.

When I was growing up, I never really liked still life paintings. I did not want to look at pictures of apples and flowers on tables. I wanted something dynamic and excing. I did not really understand how cool still life oil painting was until I had the chance to try myself. Still life paintings are where the true masters are able to show off the extent of their skills. There is nothing that is all that moving about the objects in the actual painting. It is the way that is executed that provides depth and meaning. takes a true master to paint a still life painting that is interesting to look at. The rest are just empty exercises.

Still life paintings are also great for decorating your home. I know a lot of people who have a lot of trouble deciding what kind of art prints to get. On the one hand, they do not want something too bland and safe. On the other hand, they want something that does not grab too much attention. They want something that can be part of the background decoration, instead of the centerpiece of the room. This is what the still life painting is best for. Still lifes are interesting if you want to contemplate them, but do not impose on the eye if you are not in the right frame of mind to look at art. This is what makes them such a popular way for anyone -from king to college kid – to decorate a room. They strike the perfect emotional balance, yet do not seem to be too cowardly of a choice.
