My big concern is for the little girls getting their ears pierced. It seems that an infant ear piercing could have detrimental effects, because the ear has not stopped fully growing at that point. I may be wrong on this, but it would seem to me that the potential for disfigurement later in life would be greater with infant ear piercing. I have looked at the ears of these girls going in and they look quite tiny. I have a hard time believing that there is not at least the potential for something to go pretty wrong that would not be as great in adults.

Another problem that I have with infant ear piercing is how painful it is. Now, I have never had my ears pierced, so I don’t really know what it feels like, but I did watch a number of girls get their ears pierced, and all of them started crying after the holes were placed in. I know that a friend of mine had her ears pierced later in life and said it was quite painful, and this was an adult! I can only imagine how it must have felt for an infant, and there is really no way of determining just exactly how much it hurts.

On the flip side, I have been told that infant ear piercing is a better idea than having them pierced when the kids are five or six, also because of the pain. This seems almost counterintuitive, but the argument is that having your ears pierced as an infant is better because one is not really cognizant enough at that age to remember how they were affected by the ear piercing. With so many girls having ears and other piercings, there is a lot of peer pressure to have them, so having an infant ear piercing allows girls to shop for earrings and impress their friends without having to experience the piercing process.

For me, the jury is still out on infant ear piercing, but then again, it is not really up to me. It obviously is not too traumatic for an infant to have her ears pierced, otherwise it would not be done at all.
