The Lumix DMC-ZS7 comes with a 14 megapixel sensor (even if you only actually get to use 12), and a bright enough 3 inch LCD. The function that is most likely to attract beginner photographers is the Intelligent Automatic. In most difficult situations – taking a picture of a sunset, taking pictures without the flash on – the Intelligent Automatic manages to adjust the exposure, sensitivity and other controls perfectly without any user input. In certain tricky situations, if you do desire to override the Intelligent Automatic function and make adjustments yourself, this model of Panasonic Lumix digital camera allows you to do it – which is more than can be said for last year’s ZS3.

Is the ZS7 perfect? The flash, even if it is much improved over last year’s model, certainly could be more powerful. As it is, low light shots with the flash on ,sometimes appear slightly grainy. Especially so at the ISO 400 and 800 settings. The battery life could be better. Charge it all the way up, and it’s probably not going to last youmore than a day. The star feature of this camera (apart from the Leica lens of course), is the inbuilt GPS. Using the GPS turns out to be quite simple. It does take quite a while to retrieve the satellite information for your current location. Sometimes, it takes a minute, and sometimes it takes longer. It all depends on where you are and how much direct line of sight you have to the sky. For people who don’t really need to have an exact location printed to their image files, this isn’t really much of a deal. For those who do a lot of traveling all around, it can be quite a convenience to always know where exactly a picture was taken.

We’ll start with the TS1, Lumix’s first stab at producing a tough camera, a-la the Olympus Stylus Tough. Unlike some of Olympus’ offerings, the TS1 isn’t just about toughness. Certainly, it is shockproof for drops of up to 5 feet, waterproof to 10 feet in water and dustproof. But it also does the photography stuff exceedingly well. It has great HD movie capture, a great battery, and it’s just wonderfully designed all over. If there is one area where you can fault it somewhat, it should be for the way its pictures aren’t razor-sharp. The pictures, while reasonably sharp, aren’t way up there. Still, it’s a wonderfully serviceable camera for everyday use – it has 12 megapixels, it has a wide-angle lens and 3x zoom, and image stabilization works very well. There is a downside to the toughness of course – it weighs about 7 ounces. Lumix’s intelligent auto function (what they call iA) works great. If it seems like too much trouble to you to pick the right scene mode for the job at hand iA will do it for you. If you really like the TS1, but you really don’t feel like paying a premium for the toughness, you should probably choose the Lumix FP8 – which is the same, except that it isn’t toughened up.

The FZ35 is another one of Lumix’s excellent functional cameras. Not only does it have a 25mm wide-angle lens, it zooms all the way out to 18x as well. Of course it’s nothing like the super intrusive 30x you get on some other cameras. But it’s entirely adequate for almost any normal purpose (read “non-stalking purpose”).  The FZ35 offers spectacular image stabilizing, very fast autofocus, and perfectly adequate picture quality. Like many other Panasonic digital cameras, it features a robust implementation of the Panasonic iA functionality. There are lots of autofocus options as well – face detection, tracking, and others. The camera has so many functions, it isn’t one of those products that you can use without cracking the manual. You certainly do need to take a good look at the manual, and perhaps print a few pages out. The 12 megapixel sensor is a bit more modest than what you get on most other cameras, but it’s completely inadequate. The 2.7 inch LCD is very visible even in bright light. As for the low light capabilities of this camera, they are superlative.

For those who want to trust a manufacturer to make the right selection of features for them, going with Panasonic digital cameras usually turns out to be a safe bet. You get great quality, reliability and a product that is very usable.

We will go with both Olympus digital cameras turn by turn, starting with the tough one. The 8010 is extremely tough – that’s the only way you could describe it. To put in perspective how tough it is, yoou could have Mike Tyson stand on it and the device would come out of its ordeal completely unscathed (it’s crush-proof to 220 pounds). Lennox Lewis could drop it from 6 1/2 feet up and it wouldn’t do a thing to it. If you dropped it into 30 feet of water or left it in the freezer, it wouldn’t sweat it. Not that anyone’s about to do all those things to a camera. But it’s nice to know that you can choose to if you felt like it. Coming to the reason you buy a camera in the first place – the pictures, you might be a little disappointed to find that for all its toughness, the Stylus Tough is only an average camera on the inside. To begin with, the processor seems to be quite slow. The pictures aren’t all that sharp either. The best part is, unlike many other cameras, it comes with 1.6 GB internal memory for your pictures and video. Still, you do get a 14 megapixel camera with 5x zoom, a rechargeable battery that can be charged in the camera or on a charger, and a pretty good LCD. Interestingly, the camera comes with a tap control. Which means that to invoke certain functions, you don’t need to press a button – you just need to tap the body of the camera. That’s a great thing to have shooting underwater.

Up next in our round-up of Olympus digital cameras comes the SP-800UZ stalker-friendly camera. It looks like an SLR – quite massive. It has a great wide-angle lens, the aforementioned 30x zoom, a 14 megapixel sensor, a 3 inch LCD, high def video shooting, great image stabilization and a heft is quite unforgiving – 16 ounces. It has 2GB in internal memory, and has great low light shooting capabilities at ISO 3200. There is nothing this camera gives you to complain about. Except for the fact that you can’t use the zoom when you’re doing video recording unless turn the sound off. But still, compromises have to be made in some places. For those who value a great zoom lens, this is the camera for them.
