A History of Thor Comics

January 25th, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Entertainment

The Thor comic is based on the Marvel Comics superhero that is based on Norse mythology about the thunder god. The Thor comic superhero appears in the comic books that were created by the editor Stan Lee and published by Marvel Comics. The writer and editor of the Thor’s genesis described the challenge of coming up with another superhero after the creation of Hulk: “How do you make someone stronger than the strongest person – It finally came to me: Do not make him human – make him a god.” Since his readers were already well familiar with Roman and Greek mythology and their gods, it would be a twist to his audience to delve into the world of Norse legends. He decided to pick the old look-alike of Vikings of old with their flowing beards, battle clubs and the legendary horned helmets. But something or someone was needed to headline the book ‘Journey into Mystery’ and Thor was picked.

Thor’s debut in ‘Journey into Mystery’ title ‘science fiction/fantasy anthology’ was plotted by Lee and scripted by his brother. The 13-page feature of Thor comic series would run from 1964 with the number 101 title until title 179 in August of 1970. The addition of the five-page featurette to the ‘Journey into Mystery’ title number 97 of ‘Tales of Asgard’ and later on by the ‘The Mighty Thor’ featurette came to be the dominant cover logo of the number 104 issue. Now that the ‘Journey into Mystery’ title was replaced by ‘The Mighty Thor’, the Thor comic took on a new turn. A changing creative team over the next years would see the integration of many elements of traditional Norse mythology into the title and even some specific stories of old would be translated into the comics form.

Thor comic series took on a new turn beginning in the 1990s when the comic series was removed from the Marvel mainstream continuity following the ‘Heroes Reborn’ crossover event. Other sequential features would follow like ‘The Lost Gods’, ’Master of Kung Fu’, ‘Hannibal King’ and ‘Black Widow’. Thor comic series would return to the ‘Marvel Universe’ in 1998 with a new line of writers and co-writers with the crossover storyline running until 2004. A Thor comic third title would also premier in 2007 entitled ‘Thor’ and in January of 2009, this third volume would revert to issue number 600 replacing number 13. What a long history of Thor comic and mythology that has continued to entertain us down the decades.

Manga Downloads

January 1st, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Entertainment

When you visit your local bookstore, you occasionally find people perusing the shelves and peppering the various aisles, but walk by the manga aisle and it’s a freaking sea of readers you have to navigate through—some leaning against the shelves, others crowding around the floor, others trying to get through as they browse. What could account for this phenomenon, the stark disparity between readers in the manga section and readers in any other section of the establishment? Maybe it’s because manga series are so darn long. Accumulating the books of a series together, they’re even thicker than a Harry Potter book or heck, all of the Harry Potter books combined. You might be fooled by their size, but look on the manga shelf and see all of them sitting side by side. Some series take up whole shelves on their own. Also, think about how much money it would take to own all of these series, even just a couple of them. No wonder people are cramming in the aisles trying to read them all at the store so that they don’t have to purchase them.

Or there are others who choose to save a trip to the bookstore through manga downloads. Why make the effort when you can get your manga fix in just a matter of a few clicks? Plus it’s totally free. Still, manga downloads do come with a catch—many manga series are licensed and it’s illegal for them to be distributed without permission. This means that it can be difficult to get manga downloads (legally) for popular series, because those are the ones that are usually licensed. Also, the websites that host free manga can be questionable, bombarding you with ads and sometimes even infecting your computer with viruses. You should make sure that the manga websites you visit are reputable and you should have antivirus software to scan any manga you download. Manga downloads might be convenient, but they’re not worth compromising your computer over.

Wouldn’t it be nice if manga were just free? Not for the companies, because they’d lose a lot of money. On one hand, if you were a manga artist and you honestly cared about artistic expression, would the money matter to you? On the other hand, you need money to make a living. Some artists who distribute their comics for free do get donations from fans, but in general when things are free, most people will choose not to pay.

The Seven Best Horror Movies of All Time

December 30th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Entertainment

Any ranking of films is bound to be subjective and provoke disagreement, but not this one. Here it is, ladies and gentlemen: the seven absolute, unquestionable, objectively unassailable seven best horror movies of all time.

At number seven we have a classic film, James Whale’s 1935 “Bride of Frankenstein.” This is not only one of the best horror movies ever made, it’s one of the best films ever made. It combines horror with pathos in a most disturbing way, making us wonder – is the monster we fear really… us?

Number six in the ranking of the best horror movies ever is 1982’s “Poltergeist,” directed by Tobe Hooper. “Poltergeist” is often overlooked as a genuine innovator in the horror genre, but it should be acknowledged for taking dull, whitewashed suburbia and transforming it into a place of utter and intense horror.

The fifth best horror film is Alfred Hitcock’s “Psycho,” released in 1960. It may not be terrifying by today’s standards, but this film will always be a standout among the best horror movies for several reasons. For one, it contains the infamous shower scene, and for another, it ends with one of the most horrifying and memorable twists in cinema history.

Our fourth top horror film is 1956’s “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.” This makes the list of best horror movies because it, ahem, embodies the dreadful theme of corporeal invasion as no other film ever has.

Next, comes “Night of the Living Dead,” directed by George Romero and released in 1968. This film gets ranked number three on our list of best horror movies of all time, because it is the template for pretty much every zombie movie ever made, and because it is still damn creepy to watch to this day.

At number two, the second best horror movie ever is “Alien,” from 1980. “Alien” actually melds two genres, horror and science fiction. But it also combines the body invasion horror of “Body Snatchers,” the alone-in-the-dark scariness of “Psycho,” and the grotesque monster terror of, well, every monster movie ever made. It all adds up to one of the scariest, most suspenseful and spine-chilling, and flat-out best horror movies ever.

Finally, we have the number one, unconditional, supreme, best horror movie ever made. I’m sure some amateur horror movie enthusiasts will disagree, but this is not fluffy opinion; it’s cold, hard fact. “The Exorcist” is the scariest movie of all time. Of all the best horror movies, it is the most frightening, the most nightmarish, and yet the closest to home. It exploits our fear of the most invasive and impossible to fight force in the universe: pure, unadulterated evil. That makes “the Exorcist” the absolute best out of all the best horror movies ever made.
