Gold is at its most expensive in the history of history. There is talk that it’s going past $2000 an ounce soon. So does this mean that if you are late to the party, if you’re still trying to figure out how to invest in gold, that it’s no use anymore?

Well, that is possibly the case in some ways. People do wonder how much higher gold can go. What if gold has already peaked and won’t really go anywhere but down in a few weeks? If the economy grows any worse, you can expect to see your investment continue to rise. In uncertain times when the dollar is weak and the stock markets are uncertain, investors usually turn to the mother of all investments looking for something that can never fail – gold. Even if everything else goes to pot, humanity agrees that it will never let the value of gold disappear.

While it won’t actually disappear, if the economy improves somewhat quickly, investors will be pulling their money out of gold and putting it back into the stock market. If investors sell gold to take money out of it, the market will be flooded with the stuff and its value will fall to more reasonable levels. It’ll never turn worthless like stocks or houses can; it’ll just begin to reflect more reasonable values. If you are trying to figure out how to invest in gold, you do have to prepare for how nervous it will make you to put all your money in such a volatile investment. But you can relax – it’s never going to crash the way the stock market can. Here’s what you need to know about how to invest in gold.

Investing in gold, buying the yellow metal directly in the form of coins, bars or jewelry is the most common way to go. Usually, you go to a jewelry shop or a gold provider. EBay happens to be a very popular destination for gold purchases too. Actually, they’ve reported a major bump in their gold sales for a month or two now. There are lots of online businesses that sell you gold – Bullion Vault and Golden Eagle Coin are important ones. At one time, all currency was in actual gold. The government and the mint would just circulate actual gold coins. At one point, they realized that it was very easy for private individuals or even an unscrupulous governor of the mint to take genuine gold coins for themselves and replace them with gold alloys. No one would know the difference. That’s why governments around the world decided to use representative money – paper money that represented gold that was kept in the central bank.

When you buy gold, you have to make sure of the same thing – that you are being sold pure gold and not some alloy that looks like gold. Buying from a pawn shop or eBay, you can never be sure that you’re getting pure gold. Not unless your gold comes with a letter of authenticity do you trust in your purchase.

But if you’re just beginning to learn how to invest in gold, often, staying away from the actual metal could be a good idea. You could buy gold stocks or gold exchange traded funds. This could be more or less the same thing – you invest in a fund that employs experts to buy and store gold. You don’t have to worry about how to store your gold as you would if you bought the actual stuff.

To novice gardeners, the very thought of how they need to learn how to prune rose bushes if they are to raise healthy and vibrant flowering bushes, is a scary thought. To them, rosebush pruning kind of sounds like brain surgery. In fact, search on the gardening forums on the Internet, and you’ll find that there are way more people asking about how to prune rose bushes then there are asking how to plant them in the first place.

One wonders why this should be such a scary thought to all these gardeners. The pruning part is actually quite a simple thing. If you’re not so sure about what parts to cut, just leave the parts you’re not sure of, alone, That’s it.

Now pruning certainly is an important thing when it comes to the health of a rose bush. It isn’t just control over the outward look of your rosebush. It makes for healthier blooming. With a rosebush, the first couple of years are the most productive, as far as the roses are concerned. They become less and less productive each year, starting then. So if you want to really see the most flowers possible in the couple of years that you have, you really need to learn how to prune rose bushes well.

The first thing you want to learn about pruning is when to do it. Rosebushes will only bloom in spring. What this means is that winter is the best time to get those pruning shears out. When your rosebushes are dormant and you haven’t even done your first fertilizer application, that’s when you need to put your pruning shears to work.

A word about those shears – it wouldn’t do to get ones with blunt or tacky edges. You need sharp, quality ones. A pair of handheld pruning shears should cost you about $50 if you go to the high-end of the market. They really are worth it – they’ll provide you with clean cuts and excellent control.

A clean cut it is important for the health of your bushes. They’ll heal over far more quickly this way. You don’t need to worry about pruning those bushes in their first year. They aren’t going to be spread out enough by then for you want to do this. The second year, you’ll probably need to do only a minimal amount of pruning, depending on how much the bushes grow. The third year onwards, you will really need to dig in.

In the most regular and unambitious pruning, you’ll only twigs and branches that appear diseased or dead. You will also look for extremely tangled branches and try to get things to some order with a bit of pruning.

Fall has to be one of the nicest seasons of the year – the nicest, say, right after early summer. Fall sunshine is something people treasure the most though. They know that it’s going to be the last ray of cheer they’re going to see for good long time once fall passes. As much as you’d like to sit out there and bask in all that glory though, you have work to do. You have to learn how to winterize your home in time so that there isn’t any damage done.

So what happens if you don’t clear out the gutters when there is still some sun outside? Well, how about how you’ll have to clean them when it’s snowing outside? But seriously, let’s take a look at how to winterize your home so that there is no real damage done.

The thing with rain gutters is that while they are very helpful in keeping rainwater from running down your windows and walls, when they are blocked up in the winter and when it rains, they’re going to become long gutter-shaped blocks of filthy ice. You don’t want all that weight to cause your gutters to breakoff.

Speaking of leaves blocking your gutters, you need to walk around your yard take a look at the trees that need trimming. Why do you need to do that, you ask? The way gutters can’t take the weight of a lot of ice, weak tree limbs can’t take any either. If you see any long weak-looking branches that look like they could break off with the weight of the snow, fall on your roof and cause damage, you need to find a way to lop it off.

Do you have any rain barrels around your yard? Well, once winter starts, those barrels, if they are full, are going to become huge barrel shaped hunks of ice. Even worse, a frozen barrel can often crack and break. So do yourself a favor and spare yourself the expense of new rain barrels – use all the water there is in those barrels to water your garden before winter sets in.

But learning how to winterize your home isn’t all about the outside and all the dirty work there, of course. You have plenty of dirty work to do inside, too. For instance, how about going up to your attic on a nice chilly night and walking around looking for any source of air leak? You would also do well to feel around all switch plates, windows and doors. You’ll need to add all kinds of insulating to these. And remember, whatever you spend on these leaks, you can more than save on your heating bills.

And then it’s time to head down to the basement to check on the furnace filter. When it’s actually winter, you’ll probably need to change that furnace filter once every month. Don’t worry, it can save you 5% on your heating bills. If you have a programmable thermostat for your home (consider the new digital ones made by those Apple engineers) and you’ll save even more.

And finally, be sure to check that the insulation on all the pipes is good enough.

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of the next summer – the beach? How about a vacation or the summer holidays? To some people, the first thing they think about is the heat. It’s just that some people just hate the feeling of the heat and stickiness that come with summer; they could always turn the air conditioner on, except that it costs so much. We’ve all heard about how there are alternatives. Do they really exist? How to cool a room without air conditioning?

Happily, there are alternatives; and they are amazingly cheap. Of course, they aren’t as convenient as air-conditioners are; and since they depend upon your environment to work well, they won’t do well for every kind of climate. But if all the stars align, you’ll find that the alternatives certainly save you a bundle and they can cool you quite delightfully through the summers too.

Well, humidity happens to be about the most important thing that keeps alternative methods from working. All the alternative methods to do with cooling your house or just a room without air conditioning depend on the evaporative process. There are two choices here at least – the whole-house fan and evaporative cooler. Both depend on the capacity of the air are in your city to absorb moisture. If you happen to live by the coast, the air in your environment is already completely humid; there are lots of cities in the interior that happen to be very humid too. As a general rule, any kind of humidity in your neck of the woods is going to necessarily have to end your dreams of cheap summer cooling. If you happen to live in Nevada, Arizona or any other place in the country that is quite dry in the summer, you’re in luck.

These choices actually became popular back in the 60s in the southern United States where people couldn’t really afford air conditioning, and where it gets dry and hot.

If you are trying to find out how to cool a room without air conditioning, you should begin by considering whole-house fans first. In principle, these are quite simple; and terrifically maintenance-free. With evaporative coolers on the other hand, maintenance (filling the thing with water) happens to be a major issue. Typically, whole house fans can knock 50% off what you would pay for air conditioning if you had it. For the average house, it’ll cost about $750.

The way a whole house fan works is quite simple. You install a system that sucks air by means of a fan from a room and takes it to the attic where it is vented into the atmosphere. When air leaves your room, cool air from outside comes into your room to replace it. This method typically works in places that have cool air through the night – in desert climates, for instance. It won’t work where it isn’t cool outside at night.

For cooling through the day, evaporative coolers can be a great idea. That cooler is a funny little appliance. It is basically a plastic box with a water tank, a fan and a water pump fitted inside. The fan is fitted to one side of the box and the other three sides are left open with a kind of porous and absorbent material covering them. You fill water inside and the water pump pumps water to wet these absorbent and porous surfaces. The fan spins and sucks air in through these surfaces and puts it out into the room. When air passes through these wet porous surfaces, the air evaporates the water, in a process that cools the water and the air. Of course, you need to live in a dry environment for this to work.

The question of how to cool the room without air-conditioning has been a big part of life in the southern states for decades. Evaporative coolers, otherwise known as swamp coolers, have certainly been a great choice;

Most people, they think of a barbecue, they think of ribs, chicken wings, kebabs, pork, burgers – you know the drill. How about lettuce or poundcake? As strange as it might seem to think of these items as part of a great smoky outdoors barbecue, more people than you could imagine have tried these and found that they go remarkably well on a grill. The thing is, people know how to grill all your standard barbecue stuff. Once in a while, throwing something unconventional on there – pizza, fruit or anything else – it can be such a remarkable surprise, you are sure to win over new converts with your sense of theater and adventure. Here are a few expert ideas on how to turn your grill over to a few new foods.

Let’s start with something that wouldn’t the that unconventional – seafood. Grilling mussels, actually, has become quite trendy these days. On a woodfired barbecue grill, the smokiness adds to the flavor of these crustaceans in a remarkable way. If a gas grill is all you have though, that wouldn’t be anything to be bothered about either. If you’re wondering about how to grill mussels to the best effect, start by opening each one, coating them in olive oil and a few spices. Prepare this mixture with the juice of a couple of lemons, a clove of crushed garlic, a little bay seasoning, a cup and half of olive oil, salt and pepper and a handful of chopped parsley. Toss the opened mussels in this mixture and throw them on their grill. They’ll cook well in their own juices. Once they are nicely done, coat them in the rest of the dressing you have. You are sure to start a trend in your neighborhood with your unconventional cookouts.

A nice crispy grilled salad with grilled butter lettuce will bring a great new flavor to your cookout. Get half a cup of buttermilk, a quarter cup of crème fraîche, a couple of tablespoons of mayonnaise, a couple of tablespoons of fresh chives, and a spoon of lemon juice. Get them all in a bowl and whisk them all together. Add a little salt to season. Now comes the part where you learn how to grill the stuff. Prepare the grill and heat it up to medium-high. Oil up the grill grates with a little vegetable oil, pick up half ahead of butter lettuce, sprinkle with a bit of salt and lay down on the grill with the cut side facing the heat. In about a couple of minutes, that side should be nicely browned and wilted. Pick it up, coat with the dressing mixture you just made and serve.

Going slightly away from conventional route, poundcake is eminently possible on a grill. It could be a great way to end your cookout – with a grilled dessert. What you need are a few thick slabs of lime poundcake, raspberry sorbet, and sweetened coconut gratings all nice and toasted. To get going, prepare your grill to a medium level of heat. Lay your poundcake slices on the grill and cover everything up. Wait for about 3 min. until the poundcake is nicely barbecued and has dark grill burn marks. Turn them over, wait another 3 minutes and serve your special dessert with a scoop of sorbet and with coconut sprinkled over each piece of cake. It’ll have everyone going crazy.

If you live in any kind of residence (which hopefully, you really do), knowing how to get rid of ants is a must. Ant invasions in the home can cause a lot of problems such as general disgust, loss of morale and starvation if not taken care of properly. If you see one or two ants crawling around in your house, do not think that this is something not to be worried about, especially if you see them from time to time. Because there is no such thing as two ants, but there is such thing as 2 million ants, as the movie Antz puts it. If a few ants are regularly making their way into your home, that means there’s a clear passage way for a colony to invite itself inside if you ever accidentally leave a viable food source that a few messenger ants happen to sniff out. So don’t leave your half-eaten sandwich out on the counter, put it in the fridge. And make sure that everything in your pantry is sealed tightly. How to get rid of ants in the first place? Prevention. Don’t tempt them, and don’t open the door.

If you find any openings where ants seem to be coming in, get some repellent spray and give them a good spraying. If you’re not partial to the toxic smell of repellent, there are some orange sprays that naturally repel ants. Or if you have the skills, patience and materials, you could seal up those holes and cracks. But how to get rid of ants if they’ve already invaded? First get rid of whatever the ants are being attracted to and dump it out immediately. Then, kill the enemy. Time to bring out the ant raid, but this can become tedious as the onslaught of ants can seem never-ending. In this case, you might want to invest in some ant bait traps. Open these and lay them around the openings where ants are coming in. Hundreds of ants from the colony will crawl in to eat this bait, so you’ll have to hold in your disgust and deal with it for a few days. But the bait is toxic and the ants will bring it back to their colony and kill off all the other ants, so in the end it’ll be worth it and you’ll have won the war.

Now, how to get rid of ants forever? There’s no permanent solution, but the best you can do is to minimize ant invasions as much as possible. You can do this by keeping your place tidy and keeping up your guard. Ants are feisty and they won’t stop at ways to invade, but you can do your best to put up a fight.
