The career choice of anesthesiologist has attracted a great deal of interest lately. That’s the way it has been ever since it came to be widely reported recently, that the typical anesthesiologist salary tended to be the highest of any job in this country. Young students with a talent in the sciences and in medicine are falling over themselves to find a way to qualify. Let us start at the beginning though – the question of what exactly it is that an anesthesiologist does.

In principle, the skill of an anesthesiologist is a pretty straightforward one to understand – during an operation or other surgical procedure, the anesthesiologist sits in on the procedure and administers the gas or the injections that help kill the pain or that render the patient unconscious. An anesthesiologist has to be a doctor – more specifically, he has to be an M.D. or a D.O.. The anesthesiologist happens to be one of the most important members of the surgical team, often ranking right up there with the surgeon. They need to be constantly working through any surgical procedure in cooperation with the surgeon, the surgical nurses and the technical staff. Not all anesthesiologists work administering anesthesia though.

Some anesthesiologists have their own office and work with outpatients in helping them with pain management. They prescribe painkilling medication, administer painkilling injections, and the like. People who come in to see an anesthesiologist for pain management are usually people who suffer from migraine, chronic backache, endless headaches, and other such problems.

Let us now discuss how exactly you get to become an anesthesiologist – a professional who stands to make one of the highest salaries of any job in the country. Since an anesthesiologist is a fully qualified M.D., qualifying, involves doing a full undergraduate degree in medicine that takes four years, doing an additional four years for a higher degree as an M.D., and doing a further four years of residency training. For pain management practice, one needs to accept additional training as well, for a fellowship. But that is only the part where one earns the requisite qualifications. On top of that, every physician requires several kinds of licenses to practice. An anesthesiologist needs to clear the USMLE medical licensing exam, and obtain a state medical license and a board certification in anesthesiology. Medical qualifications that a doctor has obtained from another country will need to be vetted by a local ECFMG exam too.

For the fantastic levels of training that one acquires, the anesthesiologist salary of course, is pretty fantastic. On average, an anesthesiologist makes about half a million dollars a year. Anesthesiologists who work with children make somewhat more. The work can be pretty hard. The average anesthesiologist sees about 1000 patients a year. The hours are hardly regular though. Just as with any doctor, an anesthesiologist will often find himself on call 24 hours a day. Since surgery is often required in emergencies, out-of-the-blue calls in the middle of the night can become pretty routine. But it’s a career helping people. And that should be reward enough.

Can you expect to get rich working as an audiologist? We’ll get to what the typical audiologist salary looks like, in a minute. Let us though, first take a look at what it takes to become an audiologist.

It used to be a lot easier to become an audiologist. Up until about five years ago, the bar was low enough that you could earn a master’s degree and apply for your license to practice as an audiologist. More and more, around the country now though, states are starting to require a doctorate of anyone planning on applying for a license. It is a Doctor of Audiology degree that you need; and in about 20 states around the country, it is the minimum price of entry. Earning that doctorate will take time – it’s a full four-year course.

In every state around the country, if you wish to practice as an audiologist, you absolutely have to be registered or licensed. This isn’t a one-time thing, taking the exam to be licensed. Almost every state requires that you keep up with the latest in your field with ongoing education. And they will test you for your learning at your license renewal exams. It happens to be one of the most lucrative parts to working as an audiologist – dispensing hearing aids. In several states around the country, a qualified audiologist isn’t licensed to dispense hearing aids. One needs to apply for a Hearing Aid Dispenser License to be allowed to run a practice where one tests for, prescribes and issues hearing aids. There is a Certificate of Clinical Competence and Audiology that the American Speech Language Hearing Association issues that can sometimes stand in for a hearing aid dispenser license.

Like all other specializations in medicine, a job in audiology happens to be completely safe in an economy in any kind of shape. This is a job that cannot be outsourced. The job outlook for qualified audiologists happens to be quite stellar. They expect job opportunities to rise in audiology at a rate that is far faster than for most other jobs. Still, audiology is a relatively obscure niche; and there aren’t expected to be that many jobs in absolute terms. The best audiologist salary awaits the qualified practitioner who’s willing to locate himself to a city that has a large population of older people.

So then, do we finally come to the question of what the specific terms an audiologist salary is likely to look like. This year, the average audiologist was a doctorate will need to around $70,000 a year. It’s a reasonably high salary; if you went into private practice prescribing hearing aids though, you coud probably do as well as you found new opportunities, to prescribe hearing aids.

When you lose a job, what is the first thing you do? If you are like most people, you’ve tried to focus on landing your next job, and your first stop is usually at your computer to try either writing a resume all over again or updating one you already have. Perhaps writing a resume or updating one is just comforting activity at this stage and not something that will really help you. Is an updated resume not important? It certainly is. But there are other, more important things to get done first that should help you more in your attempts to hit the ground running.

People who leave a job because they choose to, for better opportunities, may be able to afford the luxury of sitting down and updating or writing a resume to start off with. They probably have the time, since they’ve been planning this. Those who are out of a job because they’ve been laid off though, are taken by surprise, and have no time to waste. There are other things they need to do first. The strength to move on comes by quickly accepting the depressing fact that you’re unemployed. You can only come by the strength you need to get into the job hunt by quickly by moving through all the stages of the grieving process. This is not a time you can afford to wallow in depression. It’s all about accepting the fact and moving on.

One way to see a silver lining to the situation is, by seeing that being laid off allows you to consider other career opportunities and options that you always felt too entrenched in your line of work to ever go for. Here is an important reason why you can’t go writing your resume right away – you want to consider what other kinds of jobs you might have a talent for it and try to build yourself up for something new. Switching careers and starting at the bottom rung at a new type of job isn’t really a bad move. After a long time in a certain kind of job, change might re-energize you. Even if you are starting at the bottom at a new job, you’ll have the life experience you need to move more forward quickly. Consider writing a new resume for a new kind of job altogether. Because of the greatest opportunities in life come disguised in the form of a loss.

A few years ago, I was out of work and desperately trying to find a job. I dusted off the old resume and cover letter and got them prepared to send to my first prospective employer, and after applying for the position I felt much better already.

Then I started to realize that every job for which I applied (and there would be many) would require some edits to my resume and cover letter, and it occurred to me that those are two things that need constant attention, especially when you are looking for a job.

The first job for which I applied was as a reporter for a construction newsletter based in my area. I made a few updates to my resume and cover letter and sent them in. I knew that my chances of getting that job were probably not as good as they would have been five years ago, so I decided to take what my brother calls the shotgun approach and just start firing out as many applications as possible.

The problem was, not every job was in the writing field, and I soon found myself having to make major overhauls to my resume and cover letter so that they would make sense for the job for which I was applying. I had originally decided to send out 10 resumes a day, and I had to cut that to seven a day just because making those two documents appropriate for each job was so time-consuming.

Much of the resume and cover letter actually remained the same, in terms of my work experience and education and so forth, but I did want to try to re-word my reasons for wanting the job and why I was the right fit for the job in just the right way.

I also wanted to tailor my work experience to the requirements for the job. I was not dishonest about what I could and could not do, but I did make it a point to emphasize that I was proficient in the job skills required on my resume and cover letter.

It did not so much bother me that I had to do a bit of work to get my resume and cover letter into shape for each job. It was just the fact that I had it in my mind that once you had them completed, they could be used interchangeably for any job.

In the end, I was able to find work as a writer. My employer was impressed with my resume and cover letter and I think that was really a big part of the reason I got the job. I am aware that if I ever find myself in the situation again where I need to find a job, and I have to provide my resume and cover letter, it will take more work than I used to think. At least now I know.

In a casual conversation over beer with your friends, you could easily list dozens of the greatest achievements at work that you are proud of - skills you’ve mastered, languages you’ve learned, contacts you earned – and yet, now that you’re looking for a job and you need to put it all down on a resume, it’s like nothing seems good enough. This is what the professionals do – they keep their resumes up to the minute, whether they’re looking for a job or not. They know that if you put it off until you actually need it, all the little details, the instances of your day-to-day abilities and competencies, will be forgotten in the heat of the moment. And then, here’s the thing about competing in a field that is overcrowded when you’re desperate for a job – what you’ll remember will be so minor, you’ll just end up saying the same things everyone else does. Clichés, well-worn phrases, resume-ese (to coin a word).

When you think about how to create a resume, you need to remember that you are a brand at that job competition, and your resume is your advertisement. Think of just how annoyed you are to see an advertisement with words peppered all over that go – “because we care”, or “just the way you like it”, or “cool and ready to rule”. Why would the hiring manager be any more pleased to see vague claims, and have worn-out phrases paraded before him that are supposed to remind him of how competent you are? Let’s look at ten of the most worn-out phrases, that, if you feel compelled to use them, would do better with a little extra qualification.

There is a set of descriptive clichés people use for how good they are to work with. You know the ones, clichés like “Team player”, or “Go-to man”. It’s easy to understand what you’re trying to say here, but it’s better said without these phrases. Try to say something like: Understand the team dynamic well enough to inspire friendly group effort and recognize that team achievements deserve no individual credit. “Go-to man” is better expressed in something that stretches out to say, “Chosen and named out of 20 possible candidates by the regional VP to fix pressing and chronic retail customer satisfaction problems”.

Another route to avoid mistakes when learning how to create a resume would be to describe your abilities with lines like, “Well-developed communication and organizational abilities”, or “I possess leadership, and motivational abilities”. You’d be much better off saying something like, “Proven communication skills in the planning phase on a project resulted in a reduction of the estimated planning time by 15% and contributed to the completion of the project ahead of schedule” or “Demonstrated leadership qualities have been recognized by the director, and by team members, 90% of which members were promoted to positions of greater responsibility”.

You see where we are going here – the idea is to keep the meaning of the clichés, and taking your time to go where they really go; but you’re supposed to stretch them out, and say what they mean, instead of just using them as some kind of shorthand. The idea also is to give specifics, and not just say things like “Strong work ethic”. Give them specifics like, “Have on occasion sacrificed personal time to get the project in on time”. That ought to do it.

It seems like any career magazine these days that is short of an article, is happy to fill that space with an article on what could go wrong if you get careless with your Facebook privacy settings. As much as the market for Facebook advice seems in oversupply, people in the middle of a jobhunting campaign right now, can still yawn and put off taking this advice seriously. Employment hopefuls still casually fudge on their resumes for a little advantage, or disperse their applications across companies so indiscriminately, it seems like spam. The employment market these days suffers from a glut – on the side of the job hunter. There are far too many hopefuls out there, and the recruiters feel especially grand about the position they are in; just the slightest slip-up, and lots of employment prospects find themselves locked out for a good long time, out of the entire industry. Recruiters happen to work with lots of companies, and you will probably need to get past them more than once over the course of a job hunt; as you will discover, recruiters have long memories.

And you would never guess the kind of things that can permanently damage your reputation with recruiters. For instance, these days, lots of job applicants lose their good name when they send in job applications all over the place saying in each, something about how they’ve always dreamed of having that particular job at that particular company. What they don’t know, is that there’s such a thing as applicant tracking. Your recruiter will right away check to see where else you’ve applied; if it’s clear that everyplace you apply, you tell them that it’s your dream job, they see this as a sign that you are shallow. What you could do instead, is list more than one kind of position as ones you’re particularly qualified for and are enthusiastic about. You might think that sending in an application really costs nothing, and you can send in as many as they want. Some people send in applications to different recruiters for the same company. What applicants on a jobhunting campaign don’t realize is that recruiters take every single application seriously, and spend a lot of time investigating each applicant. If the recruiters come together for lunch and find out that they’re all investigating the same applicant over and over, they’ll think you are wasting their time. While on the subject of wasting time, one thing you should never ever do, is send spamming job applications. If you don’t really have a great chance at that job, you shouldn’t apply – so as to not mar your good name.

The rule basically is that recruiters have long memories, and they will basically put you on the computer and remember every single mistake you make, forever. Fudging doesn’t work anymore either. If you really only were an intern at a company or did a little three-month course at a great school, you can’t claim that you worked at that company or graduated from that school. Everything you do is completely checked out these days. And job hunting applicants who make up impromptu facts on their resumes, often carelessly slip up on a few details. And the recruiters will always find those out. For instance, if your LinkedIn profile says one thing, and your application another, that is going to get found out.
