Hardware: Any Les Paul model has a lot of hype to live up to, and the hardware on the Ultra-II lacks in some departments. However, there have been some problems with the hardware beyond it being made from a gold finish that will tarnish over time. The output jacks have thin plastic around them that can break, while the output jacks are substandard. While the company will replace parts if needed, you may find that going to a guitar repair shop may have better parts and allow the guitar to work and sound better. And as any musician knows, each piece of hardware must be perfect for the quality of sound to come through.

Here’s what escapement does. What exactly happens when you press a piano key? For the instant that you press the key, a damper the lifts off the strings so that they can vibrate freely, and then the hammer briefly hammers on the strings to cause them to vibrate. If you were to design a really simple piano, there would be solid contact between every key and its hammer. That way, the hammer would be in touch with the strings for as long as you kept the keys pressed. But that isn’t a good idea. If the hammer were to be always in contact with the strings, the strings would never vibrate freely. The hammer has to just hit the strings and then fall away. Put simply, that is what escapement is. It is a way for the key to cause the strings to be struck once and to escape immediately.

The modern Roland piano simulates the whole escapement feel, admirably. How exactly do you feel escapement on a real piano? About two-thirds of the way down pressing a key, there is a point where there is a sudden bit of resistance on real pianos. The modern Roland piano, models such as the FP-7F, beautifully simulate the pressure point that real escapement on a real piano brings. It’s just a further step along in the evolution of the digital piano that helps it edge ever closer to an acoustic piano in feel.

With a MIDI in andMIDI out that perform with absolute precision even with dense and layered MIDI recordings, this device can certainly take on the job of being the backbone of any MIDI-equipped studio. The timing accuracy is completely flawless. Moving on to the audio part of what the FastTrack can do, with its high-quality 24-bit/96 kHz converters, the device offers transparent and solid audio quality. While you do have the option to turn on direct zero latency monitoring, going through the device doesn’t noticeably upset your timing.

The device offers rock solid low latency; with WDM and ASIO drivers, you should get it down to 8ms or lower for most purposes. M-Audio keeps releasing new versions of their drivers, and most users notice that their latency goes down with each version of driver. The device is class compliant on OSX. The M-Audio Fasttrack Pro is basically a 4-in/4-out audio interface. There are two high-quality mic preamps on the front panel in the form of combo jacks that can take regular quarter-inch plugs as well as XLR. On the rear are two balanced outputs as well as four unbalanced ones. You get a headphone output on a quarter-inch jack as well.

The interface itself makes for such a great deal at $200. What makes it even better is the bundled software. When you buy the M-Audio Fasttrack Pro, you get a software bundle that includes Ableton Live Lite 4 and GT Express. The bundled software allows you to make audio and MIDI recordings, it gives you inbuilt audio effects with delays, EQ, and compressors (to make up for the lack of DSP on the FastTrack unit itself). The software acts as a VST host, and gives you time stretching abilities as well.

If monitoring flexibility is what you are looking for in an interface, this is a device that certainly delivers. You get a powerful headphone amp that drives just about any kind of headphones, and low latency monitoring that allows you to monitor with the effects added. The AV source switch on the front panel even allows you to switch between outputs if you are a DJ. If there is anything to mention on the downside, the preamps, while they are quiet and smooth, don’t offer as much gain as you would hope for. Still, to complain about that is to be a little too picky. M-Audio has certainly delivered for the home studio musician with this product, and  it is a unit that is well worth the price.

So what do you record onto? CompactFlash cards, of course. As fully featured as this recorder seems, perhaps it’s most useful feature is where it allows you to record directly to MP3 format. Once you’re done, all you need to do is to connect the USB cord to a computer, transfer the files over, and publish to the Internet. It’s as simple as that. You can power it by USB or you can charge the internal lithium ion battery for use on the road. Add to this its ability to record in 24 bit -96 kHz resolution on both tracks at the same time, and you have a super powerful all-in-one tool.

So is there anything to complain about with this little wonder? Well, it would be nice if they included a CompactFlash card in the package. As it happens, you’ll need to buy one yourself. It’ll be nice if they made the lithium-ion battery inside user changeable. As it happens, it’s completely inaccessible, and you have to send it in when the battery dies. Compared to the competition from Edirol, Zoom or Yamaha, this little M-Audio recorder would have to be the hands-down winner.
